An internationally acclaimed comedy star, actor and musician, Aykroyd will be appearing in Brandon this September. But the venue isn't the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium, the Keystone Centre, or one of our local entertainment-featuring watering holes.

Nope, Aykroyd will be offering up a two-hour autograph session at the Tenth and Victoria Liquor Mart, where he'll be scrawling his moniker on bottles of his Dan Aykroyd wines, Patron tequila or Crystal Head vodka. The selling and signing will take place Sunday, Sept. 12 between 1 and 3 p.m.

Known for his work on the iconic television program "Saturday Night Live", Aykroyd has appeared in numerous films and has taken his musical act to a variety of venues. His name is synonymous with first-rate performance, and he's brought that reputation for quality to his wines as well.

Who dares, Wynns - Sydney Morning Herald

The Coonawarra region has been an underperformer for years. With great natural advantages, which it doesn't fully capitalise upon, it's a sleepy place with little experimentation or innovation compared with other regions.

If you contrast it with, say, the Yarra Valley or Margaret River, there's little excitement and a notable lack of new blood. Fresh blood is needed to keep a place on its toes. Established Coonawarra winemakers protest young producers don't want to work there because of its isolation, but their problems are probably minor compared with the Riverina or the Murray Valley in that regard.

The giant of the region, and an exception, is Wynns Coonawarra Estate, owned by Treasury Wine Estates, formerly Foster's. Wynns is an innovator, albeit a quiet one: its genius probably flies under most people's radar. Well, it's time to switch on those antennas because Wynns is regularly coming up with very exciting wines. With its massive landholdings, it has more opportunity to excel. It owns about 60 per cent of the vines planted on the famous cigar-shaped terra rossa strip.

A year ago, the chief winemaker at Wynns, Sue Hodder, and the chief viticulturalist, regional vineyard manager Allen Jenkins, unveiled a superb new wine - the 2006 Alex 88 Cabernet Sauvignon.

Vinhos australianos no Outback - Revista Fator

Shiraz rarely disappoints - Sacramento Bee

Known as syrah in France, where it has been a mainstay of the Rhone Valley's best wines for centuries, the grape was planted in Australia about 100 years ago and renamed shiraz. It's grown riper there, and mostly vinified to be softer and fruitier.

It goes well with sandwiches at picnics, with Greek salads, tuna salads, egg salads, with barbecued chicken, meatloaf, macaroni and cheese - anything hearty and soothing that calls for a comfort wine.

Tasters at competitions describe it in terms that make it sound like dessert - raspberry preserves, blackberry pie, sometimes with a hint of cinnamon.

2008 Penfolds Shiraz Mourvedre, Australia: ripe, hearty and lush with flavors of black raspberries and anise; soft tannins; generous; the epitome of a friendly shiraz; $15.
