Antaraa: A New Blend from Good Earth Winery - Sommelier India (blog)

Brinda Gill . Good Earth already has the Concerto Collection comprising the reserve wines, Basso which is a Cabernet Sauvignon and Brio, a Shiraz, while the Raga Collection has Aarohi, a Sauvignon Blanc.

Antaraa means verse in Hindustani classical music, and has been introduced as a sister wine to Aarohi, which refers to ascending notes in Indian music.

The wine is a blend of 75% Cabernet from stainless steel tanks and 25% Shiraz that has been aged for six months in an oak barrel. As each barrel and each tank is different, even in a particular vintage, Good Earth conducted careful tastings, identified particular barrels and tanks for blending, and is pleased with the results.

The tasting notes state that the wine has subtle flavours of plum, blackcurrants and spice that are held together by a backbone of soft tannins. Recommended food pairings include milder curries, hard and soft cheeses, spicy pizzas and creamy pasta dishes. It is also recommended that the wine be chilled and should ideally be served around 15ºC to make it more suitable for Indian weather conditions.

Shiraz rarely disappoints - MiamiHerald.com

Known as syrah in France, where it has been a mainstay of the Rhne Valley's best wines for centuries, the grape was planted in Australia about 100 years ago and renamed shiraz. It's grown riper there, and mostly vinified to be softer and fruitier.

It goes well with sandwiches at picnics, with Greek salads, tuna salads, egg salads, with barbecued chicken, meatloaf, macaroni and cheese -- anything hearty and soothing that calls for a comfort wine.

Tasters at competitions describe it in terms that make it sound like dessert -- raspberry preserves, blackberry pie, sometimes with a hint of cinnamon.

2008 Penfolds Shiraz Mourvedre , Australia: ripe, hearty and lush with flavors of black raspberries and anise; soft tannins; generous; the epitome of a friendly shiraz; $15.

Extending our palates - Adelaide Independent Weekly

It was scary last weekend to read James Halliday touting Greek varieties. Assyrtiko, Xinomavro, Malagousia and Agiorgitiko caught his attention.

Bacchus knows, Australia’s wine shelves need more flavours. Your columnist has argued for decades that you’ll find a wider range of flavours in the average deli drinks fridge than you will in a big wine shop.

Similarly, Dr Dick Smart, perhaps the most influential of Australia’s viticulturers, has long suggested there are thousands of grape varieties which Australia has never tried, but should. While he’s in the business of profiting from the establishment of new vineyards, his sentiment is nevertheless quite sensible.

In recent years, largely blaming global warming for the need, we have imported many vine types. Brand new varieties, for Australia, are coming through quarantine at a steady flow.
