Chenin Blanc

We don’t know about you, but this incessant heat has made it impossible for us to enjoy most red wines. Unless you entomb yourself in air-conditioned comfort, that glass of old Bordeaux or tannic cabernet sauvignon just doesn’t taste the same as it did in colder weather.

Sauvignon blancs have been the usual go-to wine, but we also have enjoyed discovering new white wines from Argentina, Spain and Italy. This summer you might want to try the many torrontes hitting our shores from Argentina. We also like albarinos, the darling white wine of the day, with seafood.

Wines with crisp acidity can be enjoyed as aperitifs in warm weather and are versatile matches with summer foods: salads, cheese, fruit and cold plates.

With that, we offer some suggestions: • Kilikanoon Mort’s Block Riesling 2009 ($20).We loved this racy riesling from the Clare Valley of Australia. Grapefruit and citrus notes with fresh acidity and good mineral notes.

Inez Karlsson, who used to fight in her native Sweden before becoming a jockey, knocked out her 10 foes with an explosive stretch run by 6-year-old Rahystrada.

The 6-1 fourth betting choice won by a half-length over the fast-closing 2-1 favorite and defending champ Just as Well, ridden by Julien Leparoux.

Karlsson, who writes a blog on the Arlington Park Web site, scripted a perfect ride for Rahystrada in the 11/4-mile turf prep for the Aug. 21 Arlington Million.

She settled the gelded son of Rahy in mid-pack on the run down the backstretch before uncorking an eye-popping stretch move in the middle of the track.

On July 14 each year, the French gather in celebration of the storming of the Bastille in 1789, a symbol of the people’s uprising against the monarchy and the French Revolution. Similar to our Independence Day, the holiday is commemorated with parades, fireworks and parties.

I tried this beautiful blend of Syrah and Viognier at a Crown wine tasting last year. The wines of Côte Rôtie are considered to be some of the best in the larger Côtes du Rhône region. This wine had an interesting aroma that felt more fresh and floral than most red wines. On the palate, I got more of that floral freshness, along with flavors of sweet dark berries. But this wasn’t a sweet wine at all. Those fresh flavors were supported by firm tannins and a lengthy dry finish. It was definitely a unique and elegant wine and something I enjoyed thoroughly.

This wine consistently scores highly with Wine Spectator and Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. Keep your eyes out for the ’05 vintage, which scored especially high.

I tried this wine at a fantastic tasting at A1A Fine Wine & Spirits in Palm Beach Gardens early this year. Garnering a whopping 95 points from Wine Spectator and the No. 3 spot on their top 100 wines of the year list, the 2007 Vieux-Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s reputation proceeds itself. This is a big wine. The dark garnet color practically coats the glass. On the nose, strong aromas of currant, cranberry, oak and spice dominate. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and intense with firm tannins and a very dry, practically never-ending finish. This is definitely one for the cellar.

Doing some promo stuff for Reebok and some JUKARI (don’t shout) Fit To Flex workout regime, Kel looks to have rounded up a troop of ladies that would probably have preferred doing Gok Wan instead. Not against their will. Probably.

Nice for her to diversify from barely covering her boobies in a range of bikinis to some actual work, but doing lots of stretching in a little red crop top and skintight leggings means the muscles most likely to be pulled are teenage boys’ plonkers.

Still, we’re mildly interested in passing fascinated and really want to find out how freestyle cheesy dancing after appearing to have had a tussle with a police cordon constitutes a “mixture of yoga, pilates and dance”.

The beauty of it is, there is a whole lot more to choose from than Chardonnay. Thereâ??s Torrontes, Gruner Veltliner, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Albarino, Muscat, Pinot Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Muller-Thurgau, and the most noble of all, Riesling.

Riesling has a rich history in the old world countries of Germany and France where the high quality, classic style ranges from off-dry to sweet. A new world global renaissance of Riesling is happening in New Yorkâ??s Finger Lakes, Australiaâ??s Clare and Barossa Valleys, Canadaâ??s Ontario region, the Central Coast of California, and Washingtonâ??s Columbia Valley.
