Chilling with white wine - Buffalo News We don’t know about you, but this incessant heat has made it impossible for us to enjoy most red wines. Unless you entomb yourself in air-conditioned comfort, that glass of old Bordeaux or tannic cabernet sauvignon just doesn’t taste the same as it did in colder weather. Sauvignon blancs have been the usual go-to wine, but we also have enjoyed discovering new white wines from Argentina, Spain and Italy. This summer you might want to try the many torrontes hitting our shores from Argentina. We also like albarinos, the darling white wine of the day, with seafood. Wines with crisp acidity can be enjoyed as aperitifs in warm weather and are versatile matches with summer foods: salads, cheese, fruit and cold plates. With that, we offer some suggestions: • Kilikanoon Mort’s Block Riesling 2009 ($20).We loved this racy riesling from the Clare Valley of Australia. Grapefruit and citrus notes with fresh acidity and good mineral notes. On the palate, I got more of that floral freshness, along with flavors of sweet dark berries. But this wasn’t a sweet wine at all. Those fresh flavors were supported by firm tannins and a lengthy dry finish. It was definitely a unique and elegant wine and something I enjoyed thoroughly. This wine consistently scores highly with Wine Spectator and Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. Keep your eyes out for the ’05 vintage, which scored especially high. I tried this wine at a fantastic tasting at A1A Fine Wine & Spirits in Palm Beach Gardens early this year. Garnering a whopping 95 points from Wine Spectator and the No. 3 spot on their top 100 wines of the year list, the 2007 Vieux-Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s reputation proceeds itself. This is a big wine. The dark garnet color practically coats the glass. On the nose, strong aromas of currant, cranberry, oak and spice dominate. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and intense with firm tannins and a very dry, practically never-ending finish. This is definitely one for the cellar. Want a body like Kelly Brook's?
