South African wines for World Cup fans - Canada.com Although Canada failed to qualify, June 11 kicks off FIFA World Cup Soccer with South Africa playing Mexico in Johannesburg and Uruguay playing France in Capetown. Even if you can't be there, there's a wealth of South African wines you can sip to celebrate your favourite team's victories. Known as Chenin Blanc in the rest of the winemaking world, Steen is the most widely planted wine grape of South Africa. Generally made not quite "dry" and falling somewhere between honeyed cantaloupe and tropical fruit flavours with floral aromas, it is a white wine style that is easy to like. Everyday Steen is typified by Blouberg (+375709) $7.99 in its squat and stubby bottle. Pinot's acidity works the same way a squeeze of lemon does, brightening the salmon's flavor. Chardonnay - especially with citrus leanings - is also an able partner. I once had a debate with a friend over what makes a good restaurant. He insisted fancy food was everything. I suggested that while food is obviously important, atmosphere is also a key part of the overall experience. To be honest, I had forgotten this conversation until we went for a farewell meal for our younger son ahead of his Far East travels.
