When my wine-tasting group compared four Napa Valley cabernet sauvignons ranging in cost from $29.99 to $129.99, the most expensive - which has received extremely high ratings from wine critics - clearly won our blind tasting, but the $29.99 did come in second.

As bars and restaurants become more eco-friendly and value-focused, they become less tradition-obsessed, and Scottsdale-based P.F. Chang's is on a short list of restaurants offering drinkers a greener, cheaper way to imbibe.

Chang's is the first national chain to create a partnership with a winery to produce higher-end boxed wines. Since May, P.F. Chang's has been serving estate-grown varietals from 10-liter plastic bags in post-consumer-recycled cardboard boxes. They're specially designed to hold more wine than a case of 12 bottles and weigh about half as much, reducing shipping costs and carbon footprints.

With lower shipping and storage costs (a box takes up the same amount of space in a refrigerator as four bottles), P.F. Chang's can serve the Syrah Blend and the Sauvignon Blanc for about $2 less than it would normally, and the blends stay tastier longer as the plastic bladders keep flavor-degrading oxygen out.

For 1 ½ years, P.F. Chang's Director of Beverage Mary Melton worked with family-owned Wattle Creek Winery near Mendocino, Calif., to develop the program, the first of its kind in the country.

Casa Silva Reserva Sauvignon Blanc 2009 . You won’t find many tasting notes about it because it’s fairly new on shelves. We had a bottle sent to us for review. You can find it at Gardens Wine & Spirits and at Carmine’s Gourmet Market, both in Palm Beach Gardens (costs about $12). Bottom line: I’d say it’s worth it.

Made from a Chilean Colchagua Valley winery with vineyards that were first planted in 1892, it’s a pretty light gold sauv blanc, with a nose of apples and flowers. It tastes of pears, and has a crisp, zingy (is that a wine word?) side, with a fairly short, round finish. I enjoyed drinking it by itself and would definitely drink it again in a minute.

I made one of my favorite pasta dishes with tuna, white beans and tomatoes, and the wine paired beautifully with that. Both the dish and the wine have a tang to them that makes a very tasty combination.
