Unexpectedly upgraded to business class on a Monday evening BA-Comair flight from Cape Town to Johannesburg this month, I was faced with a dilemma that captains of industry, off-duty pilots and trolley dollies face daily: a glass of chenin or sauvignon blanc with the truly excellent squid dinner.

Back in poverty class, meals come from Woolies and are the best option available on the two-hour hop between the Cape and Gauteng. With Johnnie Black available gratis, only a serious wino or teetotaller would choose something else for their liquid refreshment.

One of the mysteries of SA tourism is this: when captive customers are prepared to pay to eat on budget airlines 1Time, Kulula and Mango, why is the selection and quality so poor? Surely, this is a golden opportunity for purveyors of chicken (think KFC and Nando's), while greasy fingerprints are easily wiped off those leather seats, on 1Time at least.

The 2009 Invivo Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc won gold in the Decanter Awards, crowning it the world’s best alongside only eight other wines in its category, on the back of increased success back home.

The 2009 Invivo Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc won gold in the Decanter Awards, crowning it the world’s best alongside only eight other wines in its category, on the back of increased success back home. “In 2009 no New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs won gold at the Decanter Awards, so for Invivo to win gold in this very tough competition (approximately 40 MW judges) is fantastic,” said Invivo director, Tim Lightbourne.

At home in New Zealand, recent success for Invivo’s Sauvignon Blanc, distributed in Australia by Southern Sphere wines , has included gold in the 2009 International Aromatic Wine Competition and five gold stars by Cuisine magazine. It is also now served in Air New Zealand's Business Class after it was selected following a blind tasting of over 800 wines.

The award-winning 2009 vintage of this wine comes 30 years after Montana Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc first gained world prominence from plantings at Brancott Estate.

This year, the International Wine Challenge drew entries from a record number of 46 countries. Of the thousands of wines entered, Montana Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2009 was delighted to be deemed worthy of a gold medal.
