The next big event on the wine calendar will be the release of the brand-new 2010 vintage sauvignon blancs. This important event deserves a great deal more fanfare than it receives and Marlborough could consider a celebration similar to the one that surrounds the release of beaujolais nouveau in France.

From as early as the 19th century the first wines of the beaujolais vintage were shipped down the Saone River to the bistros of Lyon. Upon arrival, signs would be put out stating "Le beaujolais est arrivee!" The wine's consumption was seen by all as the celebration of another successful harvest.

Skip ahead a century and in 1985 the Institut National des Appellations d'Origine established the third Thursday of November as Beaujolais Nouveau Day, a uniform release date for the wine.

This is a very drinkable Sauvignon Blanc with a lot of grapefruit instead of the strong tropical fruit notes often found in other California SBs. This wine features clean and crisp citrus flavors and aromas. It's wonderfully fragrant — floral and grapefruit on the nose with peach aromas. It has a very full mouthfeel with clean grapefruit flavors.

This wine is wonderful to pair with spicy Asian dishes, creamy pastas, grilled shrimp and seafood.

Pomelo is a great wine for the summer grilling season. It retails for around $10.99 a bottle.

Pattaya, the 10th of May 2010 [PDN]: These relaxing evenings are generally held in the serene garden setting in the green, tree filled grounds in the centre of the Amari’s large resort. This setting is much more peaceful than being stuck in an indoor restaurant, and thanks to Pattaya’s reliably consistent weather, there has never yet been a cancellation.

The Hotel Manager, Max, is usually in attendance, and explained that the wide range of barbequed seafood consisted of Spanish “Paola” (squid), fresh rock oysters, succulent prawns and various tasty fish dishes. These dishes were carefully matched to the various “Sauvignon Blanc”white wines, which originated from South Africa, France, Australia and Chile.

The patrons were absolutely delighted with both the faultless Amari s service and the high class company of the other guests. While these wine evenings are promoted as 750-baht “free flow” wine evenings, they do not attract any of the low class “wine guzzlers,” as all who attend are refined, well educated visitors, who appreciate fine food and carefully selected wine vintages.

The Living Land Series consists of four sustainably grown premium wines from the 2009 vintage - Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris, now available throughout New Zealand. The bottles in the Living Land Series are lighter weight and use less glass than regular bottles, while the bottle cartons are printed on 100% biodegradable paper using water-based inks.
