With unseasonably warm weather, most of us have a case of spring fever. We start dragging out our backyard patio furniture, barbecue grills are cleaned, gas propane tanks refilled and we begin tidying up our backyards for another summer season. Our backyards offer a place for peaceful solitude and a gathering place to entertain family and friends. A good glass of wine often adds to these moments.

Coopers Creek Sauvignon Blanc: $14. The winemaker that makes Kim Crawford also consults on this New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. The Wine Spectator rated the 2008 vintage 91 pts. and stated that this wine is "appealing for its detail and finesse" and that it is "light and open-textured, playing its herb and lime character against green apple and pear fruit." Grapefruit notes are not as pronounced in this wine as are found in other New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs.

There is a joy in watching the grass turn green, the trees bud and spring flowers bloom, giving us a sense of new beginnings. Spring ushers in a number of new pink and white wines to savor. While there are many tasty white wine varietals to enjoy (Italian Pinot Grigio, German Riesling, Austrian Grí¼ner Veltliner, Spanish Albarino, South African Chenin Blanc to name a few), there are two that shout "springtime!" -- Rosé and Sauvignon Blanc.

Rosé is best served young, making the newest vintage (2009) an ideal spring/summer pink wine. Quality Rosé is produced in the United States (California, Washington, Oregon), France, Spain, Portugal, Australia, Italy and South Africa.

Thursday, April 22, is the 40th anniversary of Earth Day and many of us will celebrate the small steps we've taken to reduce our carbon footprint. Maybe we've purchased a more fuel-efficient car or started recycling the newspaper.

Stop discounting your wines, says Oz Clarke - The Dominion Post
It seems we have. We are discounting our flagship wine in bulk sales to British and European supermarkets - at prices that are clearly unprofitable.

The reason is simple: We have too much sauvignon blanc and the investors who have bankrolled the industry in recent years need the cashflow to keep making their loan repayments.

The good news for the industry is that this period of over-supply won't last. The glass-half-full members of the wine industry expect normal service to be resumed by this time next year.

It would be unfair to describe Clarke as a glass-half-empty chap, but in an interview in the industry's official journal, New Zealand Winegrower, he warns that we are in danger of following the German liebfraumilch riesling into obscurity. Liebfraumilch, a semi- sweet white wine, enjoyed a century of market dominance before being lured into disastrous over-supply by British supermarkets.

Sauvignon blanc from New Zealand soared to national prominence in the late 1980s or early 1990s because of the wine's bright, exciting aromas and acidity that were different from European or North American sources.

Flavors of grapefruit, gooseberries and lime appealed to palates worldwide. For a long time you could just ask for a New Zealand sauvignon blanc. With more producers and copycats, that is not always a safe bet.

New Zealand sauvignon blancs come in three styles - fermented in stainless steel tanks (if you don't like oak), aged in oak (helps produce riper fruit as well as oak tastes) or blended.
