Spring into these vintages for a seasonal treat - San Francisco Examiner
SAN FRANCISCO — You may have noticed that the produce section has gotten a bit more colorful — and certainly more varied — in  the last week or two.

That is because spring has sprung and asparagus, ramps, fava beans, artichokes, English peas and other spring delights have emerged from the ground and are ready to be made into simple salads as well as culinary masterpieces.

Wine choices are in step with blooming gardens. White, rosé and red wines all have a place at the table, though some styles are better with certain seasonal produce. Over the next few weeks, I am going to break down spring wines into two columns.

Today, we will start with the easier greens; we’ll save asparagus and artichokes for next week.

Sweet wine for the young palate - Jakarta Post
People in Indonesia prefer wines that give an immediate taste in the mouth. Wines that sommelier Suyanto calls ghost busters.

People in Indonesia prefer wines that give an immediate taste in the mouth. Wines that sommelier Suyanto calls ghost busters. “Something that’s rich and full-bodied; complex with a strong taste,” he said.

With a relatively young wine-drinking culture, Indonesia’s wine consumers are mostly at the entry level, with consumers preferring sweet wines, Vin+ wine shop marketing manager Yolanda Simorangkir said.

Fresh and vibrant Ti Point Sauvignon Blanc 2009 - Scoop.co.nz (press release)
Ti Point winemaker, Tracey Haslam, has released her 2009 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. This wine wholly reflects the long dry summer and autumn of 2009 that was experienced in the stunning Wairau Valley.

The area is an old river valley and the grapes for this wine were sourced from a classic Marlborough vineyard site of stony soils and overlying silts which capture and retain the sun's heat during the crucial ripening period.

The 2009 season, saw harvests take longer to ripen than others, due to cool early summer weather resulting in well developed flavours and broad spectrum of fruit coming in from all over the region.

Selected individual vineyard parcels were gently de-juiced and slowly fermented at cool temperatures to retain and enhance true varietal expression and flavours.

Sauvignon Blanc - Boise Weekly
It's spring and that means time for sauvignon blanc, one of the most recognizable grape varieties in terms of aroma and flavor. Stylistically, it is also one of the most diverse. In New Zealand, it achieves a purity of flavor with overtly herbaceous and unmistakably pungent aromas. Elsewhere, with the influence of oak, it achieves a more subtle elegance. Our three top picks help illustrate some of that diversity.

Beautifully floral aromas combine with accents of orange blossom, soft citrus, lemon zest, fresh-cut grass and a touch of mineral. This California charmer is ripe and round in the mouth with lively tropical and citrus fruit flavors--Meyer lemon, tangerine, guava and mango. The finish lingers nicely with an enticing lemon tart quality and an intriguing touch of spice and white pepper.

With its crisp and sassy pink grapefruit, gooseberry and grass flavors, this is the most overtly varietal of the three, but it is in no way over the top. This is a nice mix of sweet and sour on the palate as green apple and grapefruit match sweet lemon and blood orange. Touches of fresh basil and mineral add interest on the bright finish. This is a quintessential New Zealand sauvignon blanc at a great price.

Fermented in both stainless steel and oak, this wine strikes a nice balance between the overtly varietal and a more restrained elegance. Nice crisp citrus, zesty lemon and grapefruit play against smooth pear and mango aromas with touches of clover and fresh spring greens. Creamy stone fruit flavors up front are backed by orange, lime and a hint of pineapple. A soft acidity on the finish adds balance in this lovely California offering.

Try Root: 1 Sauvignon Blanc 2008 from Chile is excellent value: Wine Buy of ... - Plain Dealer
The coastal valley of Casablanca in Chile, where Vina Ventisquero produces its Root: 1 wines -- so-called for the grapes grown on ungrafted root systems. The winery states that its products "are living proof that character comes from your roots." It focuses on chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, cabernet sauvignon and carmenere.

The Fresh Market in Shaker Heights.

This pale, white-gold wine has scents of earth, mineral, grass and herbal elements. Fruit flavors are initially firm and then go splendidly lean, tart and austere, in the best sense, with no flavor dominating. It's an excellent value.

Chicken, fish, appetizers, seasonal soups and creamy cheeses.
