Yealands, with his wife Vai, is the owner of Yealands Estate in Seaview near Seddon which falls within Awatere's grape-growing district, southeast of Marlborough's Wairau Plains. Awatere has been a growth area in winemaking since the pioneering of GPS technology to line up rows on rolling hill country, and Yealand's Estate contributes to the grape landscape with its 1000 hectares. Yealands said overseas experts were beginning to recognise the fastest-growing grape-producing region, which was now the second largest in New Zealand. Everything about John Belsham's office points to his passion for wine. Wine glasses double as water glasses, a photo of his vineyard graces one wall, a map of a French wine region is on another, and bottles of wine line a shelf. The owner and winemaker for Foxes Island Wines also runs Wine Focus, a wine consultancy practice, and Marlborough Oak Imports, supplying Darguard and Jeagle oak barrels to the New Zealand wine industry. Mr Belsham is also a senior international wine judge and a board member for Pinot 2010, and was involved with New Zealand's screwcap initiative. Cool nights during the growing season and cold fermentation in stainless tanks have resulted in the crisp, bright acidity you want in a sauvignon blanc. At the same time, those warms days coaxed out the fruit and floral qualities that can blossom in the varietal, notes of orange blossom, lime zest, Ruby grapefruit, honeydew and Crenshaw melon, along with a suggestion of sweet tropical fruit, like ripe papaya, mango and kiwi. If you are a careful taster, you will notice a mid-palate roundness and a few high aromatic notes, qualities contributed by the small amount — just 1 percent — of semillon combined with the sauvignon blanc. Some folks like to pair Champagne with chocolate while others like port. In the end, though, we prefer a nice red wine with enough oomph to mesh with the chocolate. We asked a wine-tasting panel to suggest reds to go with dark chocolate truffles. They brought shiraz, blends and one with an intriguing name ? Chocolate Box. Since this was a blind tasting, we did not know the name of the wines until after we had voted. The wine was good, and the name was good. Look below for the results.
