This wine was made from fruit of both the Wairau and the Awatere Valleys of Marlborough. Simon McGeorge's wine-flavoured career path began when he graduated from Lincoln University with a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in marketing. His exit from academia was marked by a life-changing realisation. "I decided that I didn?t want to wear a suit all my life".

What followed was a magnificent adventure through the wine valleys of the world - Barossa, Napa, Esk, Sonoma and Loire, to name a few. When he arrived in the Waipara Valley in 2006, it was something of a homecoming for this born-and-bred Cantabrian.

Sauvignon blanc burst onto the American wine scene about 15 years ago when New Zealand's Cloudy Bay, somewhat inexplicably, became the vin du jour . Yes, it was a lovely wine, but a wine on allocation, a wine that sommeliers held back from their list for favored customers? Perhaps a triumph of fashion over palate.

The upshot of all this was that New Zealand sauvignon blanc suddenly became widely and wildly popular, and attentive winemakers the world over scrambled to climb on this not-chardonnay bandwagon.

The result was as predictable as it was unfortunate; vast amounts of me-too sauvignon blanc—what my brother calls gooseberry juice—flooded the market.

But fear not, diligent seekers of good, inexpensive white wine; there is still plenty of simple, quaffable sauvignon blanc out there, and one of my favorites is this week's Wine of the Week, the Simi Sauvignon Blanc Sonoma County 2009 ($14).

Again there's a serious wine contingent descending on Golden Gate Park for Outside Lands. The Wine Lands tent will feature a diverse cast of more than two dozen wineries - a mix of larger names and sought-after small labels. You'll be able to choose from among 75 different wines.

Once you're inside the tent, it's a largely cashless affair; $1 tickets will be sold in packets of 10. More than half of the 1-ounce tastes will set you back $2 and they top out at $4; 4-ounce glasses will range from $8 to $15. A durable plastic GoVino glass will set you back another buck, but you can take it out into the courtyard while you eat - or even to the stages nearby.

And that's just a geographical rundown. This grape's many and varied attributes go well beyond that. Its natural acidity makes sauv blanc a swell food wine (and before dinner, with cheeses), while its tangy lightness, even in the slightly oaked versions called fumé blanc, are well suited for some outdoor summer sippin'.

The cooler, wetter growing conditions and lower-than-expected yields of the 2009 vintage in Niagara didn’t make life easy for Nyarai Cellars winemaker Steve Byfield, but his signature release from that vintage didn’t suffer. “In terms of Sauvignon Blanc, I was quite happy with the quality of the grapes,” said Byfield, who moonlights from his day job at Calamus Estate Winery in Jordan, Ont. to produce wines under his own Nyarai Cellars label (pronounced NA-Rye, the word means “humility” or “be humble” in an African dialect).

The newly released Sauvignon Blanc from Nyarai, a so-called “virtual winery” that makes wine under Calamus’ licence, is one of a number of exciting wines produced with the grape variety in Ontario last year. More information about Nyarai is available at nyaraicellars.com.

Winemakers successfully captured two styles of Sauvignon Blanc in 2009. The first is the intense fruity style made to express the aggressive nature of the grape variety produced by the likes of Creekside Estate Winery, Lakeview Cellars and Hillebrand’s Trius label. You might say these wines are made in the brash, zesty New Zealand style. They strike me as the perfect tonic on cloudless summer days.
