Yes, it was a lovely wine, but a wine on allocation, a wine that sommeliers held back from their list for favored customers? Perhaps a triumph of fashion over palate. The upshot of all this was that New Zealand sauvignon blanc suddenly became widely and wildly popular, and attentive winemakers the world over scrambled to climb on this not-chardonnay bandwagon. The result was as predictable as it was unfortunate; vast amounts of me-too sauvignon blanc—what my brother calls gooseberry juice—flooded the market. But fear not, diligent seekers of good, inexpensive white wine; there is still plenty of simple, quaffable sauvignon blanc out there, and one of my favorites is this week's Wine of the Week, the Simi Sauvignon Blanc Sonoma County 2009 ($14). Outside Lands' wine options - San Francisco Chronicle Again there's a serious wine contingent descending on Golden Gate Park for Outside Lands. The Wine Lands tent will feature a diverse cast of more than two dozen wineries - a mix of larger names and sought-after small labels. You'll be able to choose from among 75 different wines. Once you're inside the tent, it's a largely cashless affair; $1 tickets will be sold in packets of 10. More than half of the 1-ounce tastes will set you back $2 and they top out at $4; 4-ounce glasses will range from $8 to $15. The newly released Sauvignon Blanc from Nyarai, a so-called “virtual winery” that makes wine under Calamus’ licence, is one of a number of exciting wines produced with the grape variety in Ontario last year.
