Carriage rides were one of the activities visitors enjoyed at Mackinaw Valley Winery during Wild West Days on Sunday afternoon. The Cow Creek band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians donated $100,000 to the wine program at Umpqua Community College. That money, along with gifts from other major donors, bring total donations up to 90 percent of the Wine Institute's goal. As restaurant and wine-shop sales slowed to a trickle, winemakers became increasingly dependent on direct sales to wine lovers. One result is that dozens of wineries and tasting rooms sprang up around Woodinville in the past couple of years. There are now more than 70.
