We're talking wines, of course, specifically a new breed of quirkily named wines that aim to make you think while you drink. "I'm a big believer in the theater of the mind," says Jerry Prial, who decided to call his wine Debauchery to tickle the intellect as well as the palate. "People — when they see the wine, they really start to laugh and they smile and that's what we wanted." Prial founded Portsmouth, N.H.-based Gerard Wine Company after spending 30 years in the beer brewing industry. The wines are imported from Chile and he picked the name Debauchery — extreme indulgence of sensuality — as an antidote to the wine world's "mysterious and intimidating" ambiance. "I'm trying to fight through the clutter, all the thousands of different wines out there," he says. Unlike the critter-inclined labels that were hot a few years ago, brainteaser labels are more about "Aha!" than "Aww." Take Chaos Theory, a zinfandel blend from Brown Estate Vineyards in the Napa Valley. CAMP VERDE - Not since Secretariat first won Horse of the Year has a 2-year-old boasted as many accomplishments as the Verde Valley Wine Consortium. The brainchild of Cottonwood City Manager Doug Bartosh and Economic Development Director Casey Rooney, the consortium has helped turn a few scattered vineyards and wineries into a wine-growing region that is starting to get the attention of the world. Actually, the state's temperate climate, loamy soil and high elevations are perfect for grape growing, as is evident at Shelton Vineyards in Dobson. DOBSON, N.C. -- To many Pittsburghers, North Carolina brings to mind three things: the white, sandy beaches of the Outer Banks, Tar Heel basketball and some of the most finger-lickin' pork barbecue on God's great earth (tangy vinegar-based sauce in the eastern part of the state, sweet tomato-based in the west). But wine? Best to head to the West Coast or New York's Finger Lakes region for that. WARWICK — The Bounty of the Hudson Wine Festive Celebrates the Wines of Hudson Valley Wine Country will take place July 24-25 at Warwick Valley Winery & Distillery, 114 Little York Road, Warwick. Visitors will participate in side-by side tastings of the region's array of wines from more than 15 Hudson Valley Wineries: dry, complex, locally grown Seyval, chardonnay or pinot noir, to sweeter apple and strawberry wines. Chef Janet from the French Culinary Institute will offer chef demonstrations. She will be pairing local produce with local wine and locally raised meats, demonstrating the benefits of sourcing local foods for freshness and flavor.
