GLEN ALPINE — The inagural Foothills Wine Festival will be held noon - 5 p.m. June 5 at the Inn at Glen Alpine. The wine festival will showcase Blue Ridge Foothills wineries, artisans and music by Chris Cates & the Master Plan and Drive South. Food vendors will be on site. Indian Late Harvest Chenin Blanc (dessert Wine) Participating wineries include Carolina Heritage Vineyards, Cerminaro Vineyard, Chateau Laurinda Vineyards, Ginger Creek Vineyards, Lake James Cellars, Raintree Cellars, South Creek Winery, Southern Charm Winery, Waldensian Heritage Wines, Waldensian Style Wine, Weathervane Winery, and WoodMill Winery.SANTA ROSA, California (Reuters Life!) - The last thing you would expect to see on a tour of a vineyard is a baseball field. But there it is - a regulation-size baseball field - hidden down a slope behind the Balletto Vineyards winery and surrounded on three sides by 160 acres (65 hectares) of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris vines. The baseball field, which is not visible from the road nor the winery's tasting room, is on a self-guided tour of the Balletto vineyards. Indian Late Harvest Chenin Blanc (dessert Wine) The Columbia River Gorge, one of Oregon's fastest-growing wine regions, remains one of its lesser known. Now, thanks to some savvy marketing efforts and, even more important, to a stunning array of increasingly good wines, that is changing. In April, more than 20 gorge wineries held a tasting at the Monaco Hotel in downtown Portland as part of the AVA's "Gorge Wine Week" celebration. The wines on display showcased a growing area that produces cool-climate offerings on its ocean-influenced western end and hearty, warm-climate varietals on the east. Few other AVAs on the planet bask in this sort of diversity -- tangy pinot gris and chardonnay here, ranging to barbera, nebbiolo and zinfandel there. GRAPEVINE – Nestled alongside a buzzing highway and Grapevine's suburban sprawl lies the future of Texas agriculture. At least Jerry Delaney thinks so. And he has persuaded the Texas Department of Agriculture to help him. G.J. McCARTHY/DMN From left: Jennifer Woodson, Steve Ramsey and Al Dissmore take part in a wine tasting at Delaney Vineyards in Grapevine. Texas wine is a $1.35 billion-a-year industry, and the state Department of Agriculture promotes it heavily. Delaney, who planted some of the first grapes in West Texas soil nearly three decades ago and later grew the largest vineyard in North Texas, has watched the state's wine turn palatable and profitable. Now a $1.35 billion industry with 200 wineries from Salado to Lubbock, Texas wine benefits from Agriculture Department grants and its Go Texan marketing program. The agency just launched webcasts weaving through eight wine trails and announced a $1.2 million grant for wine-making research.
