Northwest wineries adding Malbec to their cellars Every few years, it seems, a new wine variety becomes all the rage. Right now in the Northwest, that is Malbec. In 2009, Wine Press Northwest reviewed 64 malbecs from more than two dozen producers in the Northwest, primarily Washington. While this isn't a grape that ever will reach Merlot levels, it definitely is carving out a niche among wine lovers. Malbec is one of the minor red grapes of France's Bordeaux region. While Cabernet Sauvignon and, to a lesser extent, Merlot tend to grab the headlines in Bordeaux, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot play small but important roles. They often are blended in small amounts, providing everything from structure to flavor for the finished wines. Nova Scotia wineries uncorked 16 medals at the annual All Canadian Wine Championships held recently in Windsor, Ont. Annapolis Highland Vineyards in Bear River East took gold for its 2009 Pinot Gris and its 2009 White Wedding dessert wine, silver for its 2008 Highland Blue blueberry-grape wine and bronze for its 2009 Geisenheim Riesling. L’Acadie Vineyards in Gaspereau won silver for its Prestige Brut Sparkling Wine and its 2008 Organic Sparkling Cider and bronze for its 2009 L’Acadie Star. Healdsburg is a wine lover's dream. Nowhere else can visitors experience so many flavors of Wine Country with hardly any driving required. The downtown area alone boasts an abundance of winery tasting rooms. Kendall-Jackson, Thumbprint Cellars, Williamson Wines, Topel Winery, Rosenblum Cellars, Trust Winery, Hauck Cellars, La Crema, Selby Winery, Toad Hollow Vineyards and Murphy-Goode. Over the past couple of years, downtown Healdsburg has also welcomed several newcomers to the scene. Here are a few worth checking out.
