In a reversal from two weeks ago, the Toronto Stock Exchange on Friday completed a full business week with losses on each day. Calgary runner getting his kicks pounding pavement; among contenders for 10-KM race at 33rd Annual Sport Chek ... You would think having nine children would turn you into a frazzled wreck with a figure like the Pillsbury Dough Boy and a brain gone to mush. Not necessarily. Over 100 years ago, Kansas was home to over 5,000 acres of wine vineyards. That number shrank to next to nothing by the end of Prohibition, but with the passage of the Kansas Farm Winery Act of 1995 came measured growth in the viticulture industry. Kansas currently is home to 19 wineries, which combine to produce more than 67,000 gallons of wine and host thousands of visitors each year. Using locally grown grapes, berries and other fruits, these Kansas winemakers produce a wide variety of delicious favorites, including some not found anywhere else, according to the Kansas Department of Commerce. Kansas' vintners have received more than 300 international awards for their wines in recent years, often drawing comparisons to the celebrated wines of California's Napa Valley and the Finger Lakes region in New York. Paul Vigna Crossing Vineyards will hold a Mother's Day five-course meal and wine pairing on Saturday night. Dove Valley Vineyards in Rising Sun, Md., is holding a dinner with live music from 5 to 8 on Sunday evening. Cost is $25/couple, which includes the first glass of wine. RSVP required by calling 410.658.8388. * Boordy Vineyards in Hydes, Md., is holding a Mother's Day Weekend from 1 to 5 p.m. with music, tasting and tours of the vineyard. Bring a picnic along. Cost is $12. One of India’s largest wineries has launched a collection of wines, the labels of which have been designed by Indian artists.Grover Vineyards has collaborated with several celebrated artists from across India, including Jatin Das, Sanjay Bhattacharya, Rini Dhumal, Paresh Maity and Rekha Rodwittiya, to design the labels. The aim is to give a new, distinct appearance to their wines, to commemorate their 20th anniversary. The four wines that make up the Art Collection, are a Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and two new additional varieties in their wine portfolio — a Shiraz and Chenin Blanc. The Shiraz label has been designed by Maity and the Chenin Bland by Bhattacharya. They are all priced between Rs 480 and Rs 558. "The Art Collection is the brainchild of my brother, architect Karan Grover. Our rationale behind this range was to give our bottles a distinct identity and also to give our customers an opportunity to enjoy buying wine and owning a piece of art at the same time”, says Kapil Grover, director of Grover Vineyards. “The artists we worked with were all very excited by this idea of creating art labels and each one of them has created a veritable masterpiece,” he adds. Grover Vineyards was established in 1988 on the outskirts of Bangalore. NEW YORK: Jerry Douglas has grand plans for Biltmore Estate, which is already one of the most visited wineries in the United States. “The world is our vineyard in a lot of ways,” the senior vice president of wine operations tells me in a gentle drawl that suggests the American South. “We want to have a more global perspective from a marketing standpoint and a production standpoint.” Biltmore is not alone. For a growing number of American wine companies, it’s not so much about selling what grows in their vineyards (if, in fact, they have their own vineyards) but developing or expanding a brand that connects with consumers.
