Wine Business In India | Wine Prices In India | Wines To India One year after attending a Climate Smart seminar that helps businesses measure their carbon footprint and implement strategies for reducing emissions, Tinhorn Creek Vineyards is carbon neutral and will save about $42,500 a year thanks to its energy- and water-efficiency efforts and buying carbon offsets, reports The Globe and Mail. Sandra Oldfield, head of operations and winemaker of Tinhorn Creek Vineyards near Oliver, B.C., told The Globe and Mail that by calculating the winery’s footprint and conducting an energy audit, it showed where the winery had inefficiencies. This led to many projects ranging from upgrading the vineyards watering system to a water-efficient drip irrigation system that will eventually save the vineyard about $4,000 annually when the drip system is installed on all 130 acres, and switching to 15 percent lighter bottles that are more eco-friendly and less expensive, saving the company $30,000 per year. During this project, Georges and Anja are traveling through 22 countries around the world, collecting wine bottles from participating wineries. All bottles will be shipped back to California where an auction will be held at the Mondavi Winery in 2011. All proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Lao Rehabilitation Foundation which works to improve the life of children, among other causes. The funds raised by the auction in 2011 will go to help rebuild a school destroyed by massive flooding of the Mekong River in 2008. ‘I hope you are doing well! I would like to inform you that we will be landing in India tomorrow and we were wondering if in the coming two weeks you will be by chance in Mumbai area. That would give us a great chance to meet with you, while we are there for our wine mission to gather wine bottles for charity and learn as much as possible on the Indian wine market!’ said an email from Anja to our editor, Mr. Subhash Arora last Friday. Regrettably, Mr. Arora may not be able to meet them as he is away to Verona as one of the international judges for the Vinitaly Concorso being held from 29th March- 2nd April. But delWine will cover the Indian leg of the tour in detail and also the event organized by their media sponsors, Ambrosia on April 1 at the JW Marriott Hotel where several wine industry stalwarts will be present to interact with Anja and Georges. Although it is getting fairly warm in Mumbai, one hopes they will still be able to taste some of the fruit on the vines and catch the tail end of the harvest in Nashik. Members of the Delhi Wine Club (Mumbai) will also have an opportunity to meet them and understand from a closer distance how a wine appassionato can be driven in various ways. Wineries are tapping into eco-friendly trends Because wine follows trends like other entertainment products, it's no surprise that savvy growers, as well as marketers, are picking up on eco-friendly practices to appeal to consumers. Among those leading the way: Badger Mountain vineyard in Washington state and Benziger in Sonoma, Calif. A FEW YEARS ago, I was invited to deliver the keynote address to the annual meeting of Washington wine-grape growers. This is a group of more than 300 vineyard owners who oversee the roughly 35,000 acres of wine grapes in Washington state. More than a few of them also make and market wine. Although they obviously have an agricultural perspective, I set out to convince them that they were in the entertainment business, too. Even those who simply grow and sell grapes, without having to make or market the wines, are bound to the fortunes of the wines that result from their efforts. If a vineyard consistently produces grapes that end up in highly rated, award-winning wines, the prices and demand for those grapes will rise. If it goes the other way, well, that contract may not be renewed.
