Oklahoma vineyards are harvesting their grapes right now. Unfortunately, due to poor sales, some of the grapes will be left to rot on the vine. In fact, some vineyards actually stopped watering their grapes this summer.

In all, almost 50 tons of grapes will be wasted this year in Oklahoma according to News OK . The Oklahoma Grape Growers and Wine Makers Association says it is because many of Oklahoma’s wineries have resorted to buying bulk wine or grape juice concentrate from out of state. They simply bottle it in Oklahoma and sell it in the state.

It is unfortunate for the Oklahoma wine industry because it is actually cheaper to buy the wine from California rather than grow true Oklahoma grapes and produce true Oklahoma wine. There are actually enough grapes available to make true Oklahoma wine, but it is just more expensive.

The two-day event held at the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds successfully concluded Sunday following the performance of its fourth and final band of the weekend, Side Effects. According to Edwin Rodriguez Jr., Marketing and Promotions Director for Merritt Winery the event has done what any coordinator hopes it will do each year and that is become more popular.

"William Merritt, the owner of our winery, was always trying to convince the wineries in our area to throw a wine festival because the Finger Lakes wine festival is so popular - they get thousands upon thousands of people every summer - but for a lot of the people in Ohio and Pennsylvania it's cumbersome for them to have to drive all that way for a New York wine festival," Rodriguez said. "You want to get one going here to bring up the Western New York wineries and also bring in some from the other side of the state to this area. Also, it puts an emphasis on our grape growing region here. We're the largest grape growing region east of the Rockies, the largest Concord grape growing region in the world." Each of the two days the event showcased two dozen wineries available for festival goers to sample some of their premier wine selections. To help keep people there all day the event also included musical performances from four well-known acts: Boneshakers Blues band, Us, Heard of Buffalo, and Side Effect.

I’M a fifth-generation native of Sonoma County. My parents divorced when I was 5, and my mother raised my brother and me. She worked full time in a doctor’s office, but she always had dinner on the table for us, even when I worked late as a teenager. We’d eat together and talk about our day. It’s a cherished memory.
