Jun. 8--NEW DELHI -- Indian and Chinese firms are looking to pick up equity stakes in Australian vineyards as demand for wine grows back home and the industry faces a crisis down south.

Exports account for around half of the A$5 billion (around Rs19,310 crore) Australian wine industry. India contributes just A$20 million to the kitty and China accounts for A$200 million, besides growing at a faster clip than the Indian market.

After seeing its share of South Korea's nearly $8 billion annual alcohol market slide to under 4 per cent in recent decades, the drink has also been reborn at home, thanks to a growing number of brewers such as Applease Korea Brewery Co. Ltd. who is trying to make inroads in the Indian market.

Makgeolli is not known in the Indian market and no importer, given the high duties, would be able to push the product. Although the domestic Makgeolli market has grown 50 per cent internationally it is slowly making its mark.

Asiana Airlines, the country's No.two carrier, has started to serve it on some international routes and it's even made the menus at five-star hotels, where it's typically sold at 15,000 won ($13) a bottle, 10 times the cost of some popular varieties.

During the recently organised Ante Prima Tastings in Sicily, wine journalists across  the world were taken to various wineries split into 8 groups, writes Subhash Arora who visited Cantine Barbera, Feudo Arancio, Donnafugata, Planeta and Settesoli- from a boutique winery to the ‘biggest vineyard’ in Europe.

By the time I had reached the Foresteria- a guest house in the forest, far from the madding crowds, I  barely had time to meet with my journalist friends and the five producers enjoying the sweet wines from Pantelleria, the Sicilian elixir. This new property owned by the well- known wine estate Planeta, is extremely comfortable and elegant; the  walking distance from the Mediterranean Sea would make it a favourite sojourn for wine tourists and lovers (pun intended) when it goes known outside Sicily.
